1976 Jeep CJ5. I've been the owner since 2015. When purchased it was running strong with some minor surface rust but was generally in great shape for a vehicle of this age. It has generally run well for the time I have owned it while requiring some expected updates. I have received multiple comments that the frame is in excellent shape for a 1976 CJ. SInce 2015 there have been several mechanical updates (see below). Although it has not had an off-frame restore, all parts have had professional body work and new paint. Underside of tub and frame have not been sandblasted/painted since I've owned the jeep. Again any rust was very superficial and the body was solid before the work was completed.
I recently brought the Jeep to my mechanic to be smogged at which point he identified mechanical issues (summarized below). It was running fairly normally at the time (I drove it to the shop). As much as I LOVE this Jeep I don't drive it enough to warrant the upkeep. This Jeep needs someone to keep the legacy going. Below is a summary of the current state of the jeep (positive and negative) from my mechanic Dustin at Jeep Care in HB. IMO he is the best Jeep guy in OC.
Also included but not shown here are a spare tire, vinyl doors and the original fenders (current fenders are after market). Jeep has two bluetooth boat speakers installed with volume control under the dash.
In terms of the auction, there is no reserve for this item. A $500 deposit is due within 24 hours and full payment is due within 72 hours of auction close.
INSPECTION:
Found multiple large vacuum leaks @ intake manifold gasket and carburetor throttle shaft. Exhaust leak from heat riser gasket has burnt through EGR valve vacuum signal hose. Recommend intake/exhaust manifold reseal w/ new exhaust manifold, gaskets & mounting fasteners. Upon teardown we found intake manifold damaged @ heat riser gasket flange. Gasket flange is no longer true and will never reseal, in addition to gasket flange condition intake manifold threaded bungs that fasten intake to exhaust manifold are strippedout. Recommend replace intake manifold. "Old style" 258/323 intake manifolds no longer available, recommend update to "later model" 258 intake manifold. Late model intake manifold requires update to Carter 2bbl carburetor w/ fuel feedback solenoid and update of air injection system. Air injection system parts are no longer available, recommend upgrade fuel system to Howell electronic fuel injection to bypass need for late modle carburetor and air injection system. Suspect ignition system failure, early signs of ignition system failure present: Engine intermittently won't start until you let off the key. Recommend distributor & ignition module replacement or upgrade to "stand alone" ignition system. Wiring harness recently replaced.
Brake system attention needed! Brake pedal travels too far, brake fluid in rear circuit reservoir empty. Removed front & rear brake drums for inspection, found rear brake wheel cylinders leaking, recommend rear wheel cylinder replacement and brake fluid flush. Front & rear brake shoes and hardware in good shape with little wear. Engine radiator rotten, heater core bypassed. Performed engine compression test, engine has good even compression. Test results: Cyl 1-160 psi, cyl 2-160 psi, cyl 3-160 psi, cyl4-150 psi, cyl 5-160 psi, cyl 6-155 psi. Power steering gear box leaking. Mild transfer case fluid leak. All drivetrain fluids due for service (front & rear diff's,transmission & transfer case).
Please let me know if you have any questions. The Jeep is parked at the mechanic and is available for inspection.
